Project profile:

United Nations International Criminal Tribunal case law documents archive

Business challenge:

The United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) was established to prosecute those responsible for the 1994 genocide. The ICTR produced (and continues to produce) a large body of legal documents that are invaluable to the international criminal law community and to the ongoing development of the international criminal justice system. The documents were originally disseminated, along with other UN documents on the ICTR, via a CD archive with limited search capability. This limited the audience and utility.

Challenge met.

In collaboration with Metatorial Services, Resources Online successfully developed and built an updated version of the document archive that features:

  • An innovative and powerful faceted search (driven by associated metadata).
  • Full-text search of all documents.

To help the ICTR achieve its goal of fully and extensively disseminating this information, the archive is freely available online. The legal librarians who continue to work on the project can upload new documents as they become available so that legal scholars have access to the latest information. Resources Online also regularly produces a DVD encompassing all documents to date and a CD with only those documents from the most recent year, both of which have the same search capabilities as the website.
