Business challenge:
Motivational counseling based on behavior-change theory has been shown to help people reduce behaviors that put them at risk for acquiring HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The problem: Motivational counseling requires highly trained clinical counselors who can spend 45 minutes or more with each patient. But clinics in the United States and worldwide simply do not have the resources to provide this level of service.

Challenge met.
CARE for HIV/STD is a patient-driven counseling experience offering:
- HIV/STD risk assessment.
- Counseling.
- Risk reduction planning.
- Rapid test workflow and consenting.
CARE conducts a complete assessment and motivational interview, asking only contextually appropriate questions, and successfully captures the essence of a patient clinical experience on a computer.
The patient interface for CARE for HIV/STDs:
- Synthesizes patient responses about risks, knowledge, barriers, and goals.
- Presents a ranked list of risks along with appropriate skills-building videos.
- Guides the patient to craft their own incremental risk-reduction plan.
The administrative interface allows clinics to manage data and produce reports, and an HIV rapid test-information-and-consent module handles rapid test consent workflow for clinics that offer rapid testing. Patients receive printouts with their risks, plans, referrals, and consent and safe-to-test status.
A version of the platform for HIV-positive individuals focuses on medication compliance and secondary risk reduction.
